You are on point as always. I agree this issue is as complex as you describe, and I think many citizens of Norway are so deeply immersed in their cultural framework that it becomes difficult to recognize the alternative paths you’re pointing out.

Living here in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand how closely reward is tied to real risk—the kind that can genuinely upend your life. Over time, people here almost develop a tolerance for that uncertainty, even the fear that comes with it. We’re willing to jump out of perfectly good airplanes, hoping/trusting the parachute will open.

From the Norwegian perspective, it must seem baffling. There’s a tendency to stay in the comfort of “business class,” so to speak, and to question why anyone would willingly take such leaps or tempt fate in that way.
